Making Strange - di Rosa Napa

What makes something beautiful? For much of Western art history, beauty has been bound to harmony, refinement, proportion, and technical mastery. Many artists working in Northern California chose a different path—one that located beauty in the awkward, the excessive, the humorous, the grotesque, and the imperfect. Making Strange explores this alternative tradition, showing how discomfort, eccentricity, and even ugliness can become deliberate and powerful artistic strategies.

Rather than rejecting beauty, the artists in this exhibition expand its terms. Their works ask us to linger with objects that sag, crack, ooze, collide, accumulate, or refuse conventional standards of taste. Clay remains rough and unruly. Bodies are exaggerated and vulnerable. Found materials retain the traces of earlier lives. Humor and melancholy occupy the same space; playfulness and anxiety coexist. Beauty arises not from perfection, but from surprise, contradiction, and emotional complexity.

Drawn from the di Rosa collection, Making Strange gathers artists who transformed unconventional materials, eccentric forms, and irreverent sensibilities into compelling works of art. Together, these pieces reveal a regional aesthetic that has long valued experimentation over polish, curiosity over certainty, and expressive freedom over conformity. They propose that beauty is not a fixed ideal but an ongoing conversation—one that frequently begins by making the familiar strange.

In a moment dominated by polished images, algorithmic taste, and visual perfection, these works remind us that the unexpected, the unruly, and the difficult remain among art’s most enduring pleasures. They invite us to encounter beauty not despite difference, but through the act of making strange.
